Diabetes is a common disease of the 21st century. It affects the lives of children as well as adolescents, their parents, and even pregnant women. The good news is..there are now ways to manage your diabetes with the advent of different devices that can track your highs or lows even before they start to happen. How is that possible? ..with the rise of continuous glucose monitoring devices.

The continuous glucose monitoring device, or called CGM, is a small machine that tells the pattern of your blood sugar and notify you if your blood sugar is going high, low, or stable. One of the newest device that is out in the market is the FreeStyle Libre Pro Flash Glucose Monitoring System. How it is used and is it a good device to even consider using? ..we will dwell into all of that in this review.

What is FreeStyle Libre Pro Flash Glucose Monitoring System?

Freestyle Libre Sensor System

Freestyle Libre Sensor System Kit

The FreeStyleLibre Pro-Flash Glucose Monitoring System is an ideal glucose monitoring system device for people aged 18 or older. The device can track and detect trends and patterns on people with diabetes. It can help in tracking the level of glucose in the wearer’s blood and determine whether it is above or below the average range. This way, facility-based therapy becomes easier, based on the patient’s data analysis.

The system is intended for use by health care professionals and requires a prescription.

How Does The FreeStyle Libre Pro-System Work?

This tracking and monitoring device measures your sugar levels, continually up to 14 days. Your doctor then downloads the data and will personalize your treatment plan based on the data recorded. The device will then give you all the information about the range of sugar levels in your blood and whether it is within, below or above what’s considered normal.

For that purpose, you will have to carry the device on your upper arm for 14 days. The FreeStyleLibre Pro-Flash is easy and comfortable to wear. As a matter of fact, patients who carry it with them do not even notice that something is attached to their upper arm.

But there are a few precautions that you must pay attention to while wearing the device.

Libre 14 day

  • Taking shower or swimming – The device is water resistant. However you mustn’t take it underwater for more than 30 minutes or go deeper than 1 meter.
  • Getting dressed – Ask someone to help you while you are getting dressed. This is precisely because the device can cling on some of your clothes and cause it to come apart.
  • Exercising – Intense exercising is not recommended because the device can loosen due to excessive sweating or hyperactivity.
  • Medical procedures – Before you use the tracking device, notify your doctor if there are any medical procedures you need to undergo.
  • Traveling – Also, remember to notify the security on airports about your tracking device.

Advantages Of Using The FreeStyle Libre Pro-System…

The FreeStyleLibre Pro-System monitors and tracks sugar levels to check whether it goes above or lower than the recommended levels. Patients have to wear the device for 14 days and after that, their doctor will be able to download the data about the trends of blood sugar levels throughout the entire day and night. This way, the wearer can use the right treatment based on their analyzed data at the moment of use. The tracking device is easy to set up and use.

Another advantage is the fact that many patients that have problems with the process of blood testing can now easily measure their blood without going through the pain associated with the finger-stick blood samples. In the last 17 years, the FreeStyleLibre Pro-System has shown that its measurements are specific and exact. Even better, it has been proven that the device allows a sufficiently reliable correlation between interstitial as well as the capillary glucose results.

Most tracking systems usually need to do that kind of measurements twice a day to manage the results that FreeStyleLibre can measure once a day. All the results are converted into data that can be easily downloaded by your doctor. And as already mentioned, this eases the process of adapting the right treatment to the patient based on the available analysis.

Disadvantages and Precautions…

The usage of this tracking and monitoring device requires a prescription. This means it is only available to patients that took a consultation with a healthcare professional. Notably, there is also a chance that the device can indicate hypoglycemia.

Therefore, the readings of the monitoring system must be based on trends and patterns analyzed using available reports for the intended use. If the device is exposed to magnetic resonance imaging, high electrical-heat treatment or computed-tomography scan, there is a chance that it may cause damage to its sensor and could therefore be detecting and tracking trends during a wear period in the user’s glucose value.

Last but not least, some users’ skin might react negatively with the adhesive that attaches the device to the skin. As a patient, if you notice some reaction on your skin, you must stop using the monitoring device and seek medical intervention.

Sometimes, the adhesive won’t stick to your skin and you need to still use adhesive patches to help maintain the sensor in your arm. There are different styles of adhesive patches that is sold online that you can choose from. This will ensure that the patch sticks longer, with less irritation, hypoallergenic-latex free, waterproof that dries quickly and keeps the sweat or water from loosening your sensor device.

How has the Device Evolved?

The FreeStyleLibre tracking device can be used to manage diabetes to a reasonable extent, but only if you insert it in the upper arm. When the device became available for use in 2000, the percentage of errors in its measurements was 20%.

Today, that percentage is decreased by 10%. During the years, the duration of use as well as data management software, user interface and displays, and software for data analysis have been improved. Its complexity, size, and weight have been decreased and the number of features of the device increased.

The new FreeStyleLibre tracking device doesn’t require fingersticks. You can easily set up the device with a one-second scan. Compared to the 10-day FreeStyleLibre tracking device that takes up to 12 hours to warm up, this new device takes only 1 hour to warm up and after that, it will reveal the results of sugar levels in your blood.

Those extra 4 days you get with the new glucose tracking device will allow more precise analytics and results.

In summary..

Living with diabetes should not be a hindrance in living a healthy life. With this kind of glucose monitoring device, controlling your blood sugar is much easier now.

As one of the many who is using this kind of glucose monitoring device, I can say that this FreeStyle Libre Pro Flash Glucose monitoring system is very helpful not only in managing your blood sugar levels but also giving you a peace of mind knowing that checking your blood sugar is just one scan away.

We’re hoping that this has helped in some way. If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section and we will be more than happy to help you out as much as we can.

Thanks for sharing this information. I have never heard about this device and though I have worked in the health system for a number of years, I’ve never seen anything like it used. Here, the old “prick your finger” method is still widely in use. There are persons in my family who can benefit from the use of such a device. Now that I know of it, I can share the information with them so that they can share with their doctor. Who knows, he too may be glad to find out about this less painful way to provide better care for his patients.

Excellent review!! I am using this FreeStyle Libre Pro sensor and sometimes FreeStyle Libre sensor in India with the NightRider BluCon which converts sensor into a real-time CGM like Dexcom G6. I am really impressed with the results.
