Eko Core Digital…a new-look at stethoscope

August 6, 2018 2:10 pm Published by 10 Comments

When I was young, I always admire my dad when he puts his stethoscope around his neck and start checking his patients. I felt so proud and was eager to do the same thing already. I usually get his stethoscope from his medicine bag and pretend that I am the physician. For me, wearing a stethoscope by someone only symbolizes respect, trust, knowledge and expertise on your own field. That is why when I was in school, I was in the rush to finish my course and be one of those people wearing this device proudly.

Different Stethoscope

Over the years, stethoscope has evolved into different models/designs, accessories, and accuracy. From the economical classic models to the incredibly high-tech kinds of stethoscopes. Everything you can think of probably was already been adapted in this medical tool.

My husband and I are a fan of unique and high-technology kind of devices. We are always amazed on how they created such kind in a way that would help healthcare professionals in providing a much accurate assessment.

We had the opportunity to do a review to this newly invented, highly innovative kind of stethoscope..the Eko Core Digital Stethoscope. How it works, its features, and its difference from other branded digital kind of stethoscope will make you think twice and decide to choose the best one.

The Best of Both worlds

Have you ever wonder if you can have a stethoscope that can amplify sounds and can send data to a physician in just a click of the hand? ..pretty cool right? How about having a stethoscope that can either be an acoustic/classic type and then become a digital if you want to be more precise? …well, we think we got your attention now. What we are saying is this new Eko Core Digital stethoscope that is starting to make a sound in the medical world.

This Core digital attachment can be use in almost all kinds of stethoscopes. When in used, it can amplify the sound 40 times more than the others, but won’t compromise the sound as this will still maintain an audible sound experience. The battery life is for 9 hours (which is fairly good if you asked me).

It has a wireless Bluetooth connectivity, has an app for iOS, Android, and Windows devices and works well with your electronic health records for visualization and storage. You can share or do live-streaming (without being worried because this is safely done) for a second opinion, or just to save data for future usage.

This device can also be used in children which is rarely seen in other electronic stethoscopes, and still provide an amazing, loud, and accurate sounds. The price for the Eko Core is reasonable and worth every penny.

In our research, it shows that Clinicians who are hard-of-hearing can auscultate and do their assessment with confidence as this provides exceptional quality of sound that filters to lessen the ambient noise.

Eko Stethoscope parts

Let’s compare..

With all the high quality, high-tech stethoscopes now in the market, which one to choose?

This part of our review will help people understand better which stethoscope is the best for them. Let’s compare these two kinds of stethoscopes as to all aspects that we know is also the references for many in deciding which to choose from.

Eko Core Digital Stethoscope 3M Littmann 3200 Stethoscope
Price $ 299.00 $ 399.00
Amplification 40 times louder 24 times louder
Analog mode Yes
Noise Filtering Yes Yes
Bluetooth Yes Yes
Wireless Smart Connection Yes
Mobile App Yes
HIPAA Compliant Yes
EHR Integration Yes
Phonocardiogram Yes Yes
Hearing Aid Support Yes
Store and Forward Yes Yes

Another consideration is about the battery life. If by chance you run out of battery while doing your assessment, the Eko Core can easily switch back to the analog mode which will still give you a clear sound. Most digital stethoscopes does not have that feature, they usually have a completely digitized heads that won’t function anymore if the device or the battery is off.

Let’s dissect..

What is in this Eko Core Digital stethoscope for us to even consider?

This is what the Core digital attachment looks like up close. It has a switch for you to choose if you like the analog (a stethoscope working just like the regular one) or digital wherein it can amplify the sounds that you will hear and you can even record it in your phone for future references. The volume has seven levels for you to choose from, and a micro USB charging port. Weight: the Eko alone is approximately 1.8 oz (52 grams), 3.25 inches long and 1.5 inches wide at its longest point (reference: imedicalapps.com).

Eko Core

Other features include:

  • it has compatible adaptors that attaches to almost any existing analog types of stethoscope
  • wirelessly transmits the audio from the stethoscope via the built-in app to the smartphones or tablets
  • a built-in rechargeable battery that lasts for 9 hours of continuous usage – recording, playback, and Bluetooth connection, or one review that I have read said that it lasted two weeks in one charging (an average of 21 days of usage between charges, as per Eko website)
  • works effectively in single-tube stethoscopes
  • digital and analog modes

Eko has released the second generation of Eko Core or Duo Digital Stethoscope. It is 25% smaller and 30% lighter than the first release, still comes in either as an all-in-one digital stethoscope or it can also be an attachment for your own stethoscopes.

The newest version of Eko Core can provide up to 40x the amplification, has an advanced noise cancellation, a wireless Bluetooth connectivity, and has the ability to switch between acoustic and digital modes. The Eko Core’s built-in battery can last up to 10 hours of of continuous usage, some clinicians say that this lasts up to a week of use.

The Good and the Bad..

With everything around us, there will always be a good and a bad thing. That’s nature..that’s how life works. Same thing in the medical field…the good and the bad things about the tools that you used in your everyday life in the medical world.

As for stethoscopes, we also see the good and the not so good things of this tool..this is the way for us to know if it is really helpful or not

Eko Core Stethoscope

We have discussed the good side of this device, which mainly are:

  • can function as analog or digital mode
  • the attachment works with most stethoscopes
  • amplifies sound 40 times louder
  • wireless Bluetooth LE
  • HIPAA compliant
  • built-in app for iOS, Android, and Windows devices
  • has a battery life of 9 hours to 10 hours (for the newest version)

Now let us see what are the things that we need to further look at. One thing to consider is the on-and-off switch…when you are in a busy department and wanted to use your Eko Core in the digital mode but forgot to turn it off after using, then pretty much your battery will drain overnight. But even if this happens, you can still use this stethoscope using the analog mode. Besides, charging this attachment will only take 40 minutes to charge fully.

Another thing to consider is the weight. Most people prefer using something that is not that heavy.. we think it’s more of because working a 12-hour shift requires you to do a lot of load and additional weight around your neck might not be a good idea. However, if you are just like us who really do not mind about the weight, then this device is good for you. The weight is really not that heavy..it is around 52 grams or if converted to pounds, according to google.com, it is 0.11464 lbs…not much if you ask me.

For the newest version of the Eko Digital Stethoscopes, the weight is 30% lighter and 25 % smaller than the first generation of Eko Core Staethoscopes.

Most individuals are visuals, so using this device might not be a consideration for them. The Eko Core has just a LED indicator to show it is working as a digital stethoscope. Some electronic stethoscopes have a LCD display for you to see and navigate based on your preferences. We still think simplicity is beauty and that is what we have seen in this Eko device. Too complicated tool can be just a ground for error..what do you think?

The Eko Core has a 1-year warranty which if compared to other digital stethoscopes is lesser since others offer until 2 years. But regardless, this is still way less compared to the 3-7 year warranty that most analog types of stethoscope offer.

The Verdict…

Though with some downside to this product, we still consider it as the best option to choose from. Eko Core gave a new-look at stethoscopes in a way that is not only in terms of the presentation but the overall quality.

The Eko Core Digital stethoscope is indeed a new modern technology. It is simple, easy to use, practical, and fashionable type of stethoscope that opens the door for users in terms of improvement, just like the other modern technologies.

Overall, we give this Eko Core Digital stethoscope an excellent job for coming up with this kind of device and sharing it in the healthcare world. This definitely will improve the overall performance of each one in the medical field.

We’re hoping that this has helped in some way. If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section and we will be more than happy to help you out as much as we can.

The Eco core certainly has a big role in the market. My wife suffers from a-fib so we need to
know what is happening. I would presume that the recorded echo could be an attachment to
a Doctor or Medical centre for a quick opinion more than a diagnosis.

The first check at any time is listening to the heart and early diagnosis could save lives.

You are true in what you said, Peter. Eko Core can be just an attachment for any kind of stethoscope to make a regular analog to a digital one. Now, there is also the Eko DUO which is a portable and powerful combined ECG and digital stethoscope designed for clinical use. This DUO combines the heart sounds and ECG for more comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular system to prevent/lessen a more invasive, time-consuming, and costly work-up. Eko DUO can capture ECG and systolic time intervals to have an effective detection of heart failure or AFib.

Hi! I have been reviewing different stethoscopes and this one has clicked with me. I’m glad I came across your site and read this post. The features that I like most are: it can function as analog or digital mode and it can amplify sound 40 times louder. Considering it’s weight I think 52 grams around my neck is nothing.
